The Federal Reserve, the central bank of the United States, was established in late 1913 marking this year its 100th anniversary. Coming on the heels of the 1907 financial panic, the Fed was supposed to tame the wildcat free market. Acting as a lender of last resort, the Fed was supposed to deliver a less volatile, more consistent growth. Did the Fed deliver on this promise? History speaks for itself. Both the Great Depression and our current "Great Recession" occurred on the Fed's watch. Beyond the macro instability, the Fed has destroyed the value of the dollar, which has lost more than 95 percent of its purchasing power since 1913. In addition, the Fed acts as the Treasury’s banker, absorbing whatever debt Uncle Sam can’t foist off on the public. The obvious result: an explosion in the size and scope of the federal government, through its programs of domestic welfare programs and foreign warfare. Is all hope lost? What can the individual family or small business owner do in this environment? Come to the Night of Clarity to learn the problem—and solutions—from some of the country’s top scholars and speakers.
